Open Letter

Change is imperative. Escalating workloads, inadequate preparation time, the alarming normalization of harassment and violence within schools, and salaries failing to keep pace with inflation are all clear indicators that our education system is failing its educators and students.

These are not just symptoms; they are glaring indications of a systemic failure within our education system, one that is letting down our teachers, specialists and students.

Our profession stands at a critical juncture. 2017 marked a pivotal moment when NSTU members were forcibly legislated into a contract and compelled back to work following a one-day strike. The heavy-handed tactics of the McNeil government, bent on dismantling unions, saw administrators ousted from the NSTU. These actions instilled anger and a sense of powerlessness among our members.

The NSTU achieved a major victory with the overturning of Bill 75, a draconian piece of legislation denounced by Justice Keith as 'vengeful,' 'terribly wrong,' and ultimately unconstitutional. Yet, our struggles persist. The current government may not exhibit the same overt hostility toward the union as its predecessor, but make no mistake—it continues to undermine our negotiation process.

The majority of professional organizations have threatened to or have gone on strike during negotiations with the Houston Government. We cannot afford to be complacent; our collective voice, consisting of ten thousand impassioned members, must resound loudly and unequivocally. It is imperative that this government acknowledges and respects the concerns of our profession.

The NSTU requires a bold leader—one who will fight to ensure that the voices of our members are truly heard.

I have used my voice with clear messages to effectively amplify NSTU concerns to our members, the public, and government. I spoke out at law amendments, on traditional media outlets on television, radio, and print, as well as on social media platforms.

As President of the NSTU, I will stand up for you, and your voice … our voice … will be heard.
